Second & Third Grade: March 16 - 20, 2026
Hello Second and Third Grade Families,
The class continued their study of Sumerian and Akkadian stories, which often focus on the adventures of the gods. They learned that many gods have multiple names due to the merging of Sumerian and Akkadian cultures and the retelling of stories over time. To help keep track, the students created a chart listing the gods, their roles (such as god of storms), and their Sumerian and Akkadian names. This work was paired with the story Marduk and the Dragon.
The Second and Third graders also heard The Captive God and the Clever Fox, a story about the storm god Ishkur being helped by a fox. Since the ending of this story has been lost due to damage to the tablet it was written on, the students wrote their own endings, imagining whether the fox succeeded in rescuing Ishkur. This activity encouraged both creativity and writing practice.
Work also continued on the auction project. The students have nearly finished crocheting animals to fill the barn. With the help of parent volunteers, construction of the barn began, and doll farmers were created, modeled after themselves. Today, Dana (Lily’s mom) visited to demonstrate how to use tools and helped the class saw, drill, and assemble the barn. The group greatly enjoyed this hands-on experience and gained an appreciation for woodworking.
Our class will continue exploring Sumerian and Akkadian stories while reviewing spelling, grammar, and math skills covered earlier in the year. The students are building confidence through this review, and it’s wonderful to see their progress.
