Kindergarten Chickadees: March 23 - 27, 2026
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
The Chickadees were very busy with creative and practical work last week. Throughout the week, students worked on the felted play mat, using warm, soapy water to felt the colors onto a cotton batting back. They will continue to work on wet felting for the auction project this week. On Thursday, the children painted using all three colors in any order and combination they desired. Everyone spent a great deal of time and concentration on their work, many adding details such as shapes, shading, and other design elements. Students also worked throughout the week, creating little gardens to take home in a few weeks. They added potting soil to planters, sprinkled wheatgrass seeds, gently placed zinnia seeds on top, sprinkled more soil over the seeds, and watered them before setting the pots in a sunny spot on the platform. Throughout this process, the students needed to utilize listening skills and follow multi-step directions with care and precision.
Alongside the themes of spring and plants, the class enjoyed two types of floral tea during snack. On Thursday, they tried honey-lavender tea, and on Friday, they tasted Tres Flores (12 flowers) tea from Mexico. This week, students will enjoy butterfly pea flower tea with lemon added to change the color from purple to pink, and hibiscus-rose tea. Last week, the base of a celery bunch was cut for the apple and celery snack. The students watched as the base was placed into a shallow dish of water and set in the sun, and discussed how new celery stalks would grow from the scraps. The class enjoyed a discussion about many ways to use vegetable leftovers, such as cutting and freezing them for later recipes or, for some types of vegetables, placing them in water to keep them fresh or grow new plants. This week, the class will put an avocado pit in water to try to sprout a new tree and attempt to propagate rosemary cuttings.
