Middle School: March 30 - April 3, 2026

Hello, Middle School Families,

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Grandfriend’s Day before break! It was a lovely day and wonderful to see everyone. Thank you to all who donated food and drinks. We had a delicious spread that was (happily) demolished by the students.

The week before Spring Break, the class explored the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural, social, and artistic movement centered in Harlem, New York City. The students were fascinated to learn about the explosion of creativity energy that originated in Harlem’s three mile square block. Harlem produced luminaries from literature, theater, art, dance, and music to activists, philosophers and intellectuals.

While not traditionally Waldorf to use technology to teach students, in Middle School there are times when technology is utilized to bring moments alive. The class listened to the iconic voice of Billie Holiday singing, Louis Armstrong playing the trumpet, Duke Ellington & his band playing at The Cotton Club, and watched performers doing the Lindy Hop, a dance that originated in Harlem at the Savoy Ballroom. Students read poetry from Langston Hughes and Georgia Douglas Johnson, and viewed art from Aaron Douglas. All of these together showed how art can be a form of expression and a form of activism, setting the stage for the learning about the Civil Rights movement now that we are back from break.
