Kindergarten Dragonflies: August 11-14, 2026
Dear Dragonfly Families,
Thank you all for attending our class Meet and Greet this past Saturday! Every Dragonfly student was in attendance, which made it a very special chance for the children to meet one another and explore their new classroom. Although our first week was short, the children spent it wonderfully growing connections with each other and familiarizing themselves with the new routines of kindergarten. The students enjoyed playing with the mud left over from the evening rainstorms, playing with the wooden trucks on the platform, and spotting every caterpillar they could find hidden around the forest. Last Thursday we had a big rainstorm appear out of nowhere - which is why it’s always important to send students with rain gear even if the forecast doesn’t show rain! Coincidentally, our story for these first two weeks is about the littlest raindrop who is at first afraid to leave Mommy Cloud to travel to the world below, but after summoning the courage, the little raindrop falls to the ground where he has a full, fun day with all of his raindrop friends. Mommy Cloud is, of course, waiting for him with open arms when he returns from his adventure and excitedly listens as he tells about his day.
This week our class is looking forward to exploring the creek and beginning handwork projects such as dyeing handwork bags to be used for the rest of the year. We will also start our weekly watercolor painting, beginning with painting with the color yellow. In Waldorf tradition, early childhood classes paint with wet watercolor paints on wet paper, focusing on one color at a time before gradually adding more colors to paint with. This wet-on-wet technique creates a gentle, more harmonious effect which emphasizes the fluidity of the paint; this also allows colors to blend and flow seamlessly once more colors are added. It’s traditional to paint with one primary color at a time, as it encourages children to explore that color, utilize their creativity, and improve their patience. We had a great first week, and we look forward to a wonderful year!
