Kindergarten Dragonflies: August 17-21, 2026
Dear Dragonfly Families,
Our class had a week of many ‘firsts’ this past week. On Monday, we enjoyed a first visit to the creek, in which the children were able to play in the water, spot shining rocks, and collect clam shells. On Wednesday, we began our watercolor painting with yellow, and the students had a chance to explore the indoor classroom. On Thursday, the children were sent into the forest on a mission to collect interesting leaves, pinecones, rocks, or any other treasures they could find. After gathering these items, each arranged them on their cloth handwork bags. The bags were then sprayed with a fabric dye so that the outlines of the collected treasures would be apparent, creating a design unique to each child. These handwork bags will remain at school and will be how the students store various handwork projects while they are in process. We also celebrated Micah’s fourth birthday with his family. Happy birthday, Micah!
The class’s confidence with the words and the movements of our morning circle has been steadily growing, and it’s lovely to hear their many voices combining in unison. Looking ahead, our story will be a tale of How the Rainbow was Made, a Native American folktale in which old Nanabozho looked out his window and realized that all of the flowers in his garden were the same white color. Deciding that his garden needed new and different colors, he went out with his paintbrushes to paint the flowers with his many paint pots. Intrigued, a pair of bluebirds splashed into his paint and flew near a waterfall, zipping around creating the rainbow, which Nanabozho decided should remain by waterfalls forever. To explore our story and the colors themselves, the class will enjoy fruits that span the colors of the rainbow, including skewering them in correct order during snack time. This gives an opportunity to interact with the colors of the rainbow as well as practice fine motor skills necessary for future endeavors, such as holding pencils.
