First Grade: August 17-21, 2026

Dear First Grade Families,

The first full week of school has been wonderful and very busy while learning the routines. Students are starting to learn their verses for lunch and snack, and have been working hard on staying quiet in the hallways.  Students almost have a full crayon roll and are eagerly awaiting to receive their final few block and stick crayons. Teta Chocka is their favorite part in circle time, and students can be heard chanting it throughout the day. Daily recitations such as this support children’s memory, language development, speech, rhythm, coordination, and confidence while bringing a steady, grounding rhythm to the school day. In this first block of the school year,  the class has been continuing to learn about different forms through movement, stories, and the senses. Students are getting to experience each form through a variety of ways, such as air drawing, tracing, and working as a class to be the form.

In addition to Form Drawing, students completed their first watercolor painting of the year, where the class got to experience how blue and yellow interact. This was an exercise in both patience and observing how the colors affect each other. The First Grade students also began working with the pentatonic flute. We have been focusing on how to hold the flute and warm-up exercises. They are eagerly looking forward to actually playing them.

This class loves to play, and their play and games have already evolved since the start of school. Students are playing with different classmates every day and growing their friendships, new and old. Whether they are inside, at the platform, or on the playground, they are constantly coming up with new games. This group of students continues to demonstrate their creativity in so many wonderful ways.
