Second & Third Grade: August 17-21, 2026
Dear Second and Third Grade Families,
The class had a balanced week of academic learning, social time, and physical play last week. Friendships, both old and new, are in full flower! Our school’s mixed-age experience reflects the Waldorf view of the classroom as a living community. Each child has the chance to both receive support and become a source of support for others, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and connection.
In our combined Second and Third Grade Class, students have the unique opportunity to grow alongside peers of a different age in an intimate shared classroom environment. Younger students benefit from having older classmates as role models, while older students develop leadership, patience, and compassion as they support and encourage their younger peers. Children learn to navigate different personalities, perspectives, and developmental stages while practicing communication and problem-solving. All year long, students will work toward espousing and embodying simple values: generosity of spirit, responsibility, and reverence. Kindness is the heartbeat of the class.
As the class continues learning about Aesop’s fables, they might inwardly examine themselves and the interactions they see around them. They are becoming more aware of polarities in human nature: generosity and greed, self-control and impulsiveness, and cooperation and selfishness. In addition to illustrating these timeless stories, students have been practicing their handwriting, learning about the magic “e” in phonics or practicing the rule with more advanced words, and reviewing skip counting by twos, fours, fives, and 10s. They will continue the fables block for two more weeks before their first math block of the year.
