Kindergarten Dragonflies: August 17-21, 2026
Dear Dragonfly Families,
The Dragonflies had a week full of activity, adventure, and building friendships. There were many opportunities to build and refine motor skills. Today, the class skewered and enjoyed our special snack tied to the folktale of How the Rainbow was Made. Thank you to everyone who donated the fruit for the snack! If you wanted to donate, but didn’t have a chance to, there will be more opportunities in the future as we continue to occasionally link food to a story or festival. For handwork, students made pompoms using small yarn balls by first wrapping the yarn around a piece of cardboard, then tying the yarn tightly. This process encourages the development of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as they had to keep the yarn in the same spot while winding, and builds patience as they were encouraged to go slowly and wrap as much yarn as possible. Once the yarn balls were tied, the children then practiced using scissors by cutting the loops, which created their fluffy pompoms. Handwork projects will increase in frequency and difficulty as the year progresses and their fine motor skills enhance. We also celebrated Everest’s sixth birthday with his family. Happy Birthday, Everest!
Crayon drawing with intention is another valuable weekly activity. On Thursday, the children finished their second drawings as a class. These first drawings will be laminated and turned into the covers of their drawing journals for the year. As a class, we quietly drew together on the platform, and the children were given a chance to display their drawings to one another. In the weeks to come, the class will begin drawing in the forest. Each student will choose a spot within our classroom, and this will remain their drawing space throughout the year. Forest drawing is a wonderful ‘in breath’ activity in which children are encouraged to silently notice the sights and sounds in the world around them and translate these feelings onto their drawings, or to simply explore their creativity and imagination and draw what’s in their heads and hearts. These drawing journals will be available for you to view at our Early Childhood Curriculum night next Tuesday, September 8th. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Conferences are for adults only and are an opportunity to come together to talk about your child’s experiences at school, celebrate their growth, and share any questions, observations, or concerns.
