Kindergarten Chickadees: March 2-5, 2026

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

What a beautiful, spring week the class experienced last week!  Students engaged in drawing, sewing, and practical work in the forest classroom. The warmer weather allowed children to more easily navigate pencils outdoors, so we returned to stretching, breathing, and nature journaling exercises on Wednesday. This activity will continue throughout the school year, and this semester’s nature journals will go home at the end of the school year. Along with plentiful imaginative play in the forest, students visited the farm, where they fed leftover apples and celery to the goats and donkeys. They also took a nature walk, where they saw geese and the return of the school’s pond turtles!

This week and throughout the spring, the Chickadees will learn about and observe growing edible plants from food scraps and propagation. They will put celery, romaine lettuce, rosemary cuttings, an avocado seed, and a pineapple top in glass containers filled with water to see how fast they grow roots or new shoots. The celery and romaine will be eaten during snack at school, and the rosemary will be transplanted and used to make a special snacktime treat at the end of the school year. They will also receive their own containers to plant wheatgrass and zinnias, which they can take home later in the spring. Indoors, the students have already been watching baby spider plants that were cut from our larger plant, which were placed in water and are growing roots. These plants will be ready to transplant soon, too! It is an exciting time for gardening at school.

Announcements & Reminders:

As the weather becomes warmer, but is often still cool in the mornings and remains shaded and cooler in the forest, it is important to dress your child in layers. Packing a sweatshirt or light jacket each day is very helpful for when they feel too hot in a coat, but it is not yet warm enough for a t-shirt or even a long-sleeved shirt.

Parent-Teacher Spring Conferences are this week! Your prompt arrival is greatly appreciated, as it helps ensure that each family has ample time to discuss their child’s learning and growth at school.

  • March 12: Teacher-Parent Conferences (Half-day)

  • March 13: Teacher-Parent Conferences (No School)

  • March 18–19: Picture Day - Class photos will be taken, along with a makeup opportunity for students who missed photos in the fall.

  • April 1: Grandfriends Tea at 11:00 (Full Day)

Gyvalieliga,

Ki Holly
