Middle School: March 9 - 13, 2026
Hello, Middle School Families,
In the second week of our American History Block, students listened to the biography of Olaudah Equiano, as well as read excerpts from his book The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano Written by Himself. Envisioning his capture and march to the sea, students painted a watercolor of his description of seeing the beauty of the ocean for the first time, juxtaposed with the presence of a slave ship on the horizon.
Students then listened to a story from Harriet Tubman’s life, learning about this remarkable figure in American history and her unshakable spirit and fearless leadership. Again, students utilized the medium of watercolor painting to depict her leading a group through the darkness to freedom. Students interpreted this in many different ways, but all displayed Tubman as a beacon of hope and light.
Building off the experiences of Equiano and Tubman, students saw the connections to the end of the Revolutionary War and the discussions in the country surrounding slavery that all contributed to causing the U.S. Civil War.
Finally, as a carryover from last week, the class participated in a mock simulation of how a bill becomes a law. “Senators” and “Representatives” in the House and Senate brought forth their bills for comment and debate, and ultimately voted on the bills. Three of the four bills presented passed both the Senate and House of Representatives and have now been sent to Madame President (their teacher!) to either sign into law or veto.
Thank you all so much for joining me for parent conferences. It is, as always, a joy to share with you your children’s accomplishments and growth throughout the year!
