First Grade: August 31-September 4, 2026
Dear First Grade Families,
This week was filled with excitement as students were introduced to three letters: B, M, and D. The letters of the alphabet are introduced over the course of a few days. First, the students experience a story auditorily. The following day, students experience the story sensorily by creating a drawing from the story. The drawing is of something that begins with the letter being taught and is drawn in the shape of the capital letter. Finally, on the third day, students will learn the name of the letter and the corresponding sound. Each student gets to experience the letter uniquely before learning the name of the letter. While introducing the letters, the students loved getting to brainstorm words that began with the letter they learned about. A way for students to practice corresponding letters to sounds is to see if they can find objects that start with the letters B, M, or D.
The First Graders were ecstatic to finally be able to play their flutes. Up until this week, students were warming up with the flute and learning where to place their fingers. By delaying actually playing the flute, each student’s will and patience were being developed. They learned patience and the power of practice. The students are learning a song in which they play two notes while continuing to work on holding the flute correctly and covering the holes completely.
First Grade has been practicing to follow school expectations, procedures, and routines. The class has learned much since the beginning of school. Few reminders need to be given about how to line up shoes neatly along the walls and how to carry a water bottle and/or lunch box so it does not bump into the walls or stairs. This group of students is very social and always enjoys talking to their classmates. The class has also been working hard on self control and keeping quiet voices in the hallways. As First Grade continues to work on following these expectations and procedures, students have been kind and gentle when reminding their fellow classmates to follow instructions.
