First Grade: September 7-11, 2026
Dear First Grade Families,
What a quick week! Thank you for coming to curriculum night. It was a joy sharing what every school day looks like for First Grade and how the school year will progress!
First Grade continued their Language Arts block by learning some new letters. N was learned through the Nixie of Mill Pond. R was learned through Rapunzel. L was learned through The Musicians of Bremen. The students are practicing how to write each letter and what sound it makes. Together we say, “M spells /m/,” as opposed to “M says /m/.” This is in preparation for writing and spelling later on. As more letters are introduced, a continual review of letters already learned is also happening. This is typically done through games and partner or group activities. For example, a group will be given a written letter and be told to act out something that starts with this letter. In Waldorf education, movement, play, and imagination are woven into learning to help children engage deeply with new concepts and strengthen their understanding through experience.
This week, students got their first opportunity to play a part in a fairy tale. The Golden Goose is the chosen fairy tale that will introduce students to the letter G. The story is wonderful and silly. Each child got to be at least one character. The class absolutely loved being a part of the fairy tale. There was constant giggling, and yet, each student was appropriately concentrating solely on the story. By portraying a character in the fairy tale, deeper connections were made to the story. They are already excited to be a part of the next story and see what part they will play.
The class has been diligently practicing two songs they will perform with the other Grade classes during the Day of Courage. This will take place next Friday, which is a half day, and students are asked to wear a plain red shirt. To support the Third Grade students, First Grade is looking forward to handcrafting bracelets. As this is a student-focused event, we look forward to sharing photos on our app!
Class Reminders and Announcements:
Roots & Rhythm: We are excited to welcome Mari Cooper to our community! Throughout this school year, she will be leading an eight-session parent education series. With extensive experience in Waldorf education, Mari will invite participants to explore the “why” behind what we do through music, movement, and meaningful discussion. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the roots of our curriculum while connecting with other parents in our community.
Participation is expected for all new parents, and all parents are encouraged to join! as part of our commitment to building a shared understanding of the philosophy and practices that guide our school. We look forward to supporting you on this beautiful journey of parenting!
