Kindergarten Dragonflies: September 7-11, 2026

Dear Dragonfly Families,

Although this past week was a short week following Labor Day, it was full of activities, fun, and growing friendships. On Wednesday, we began our handwork project that students will finish this week, if they have not done so already. The children are hand-sewing together two pieces of wool fabric in the shape of a star. Some have added extra fabric to make it a shooting star, others have added a stick to make it into a magical star wand, and some children have done both. As the year progresses, handwork and sewing projects will increase in complexity and difficulty. To begin, students are learning the basics, such as the running stitch. The class is told that the needle is like a dolphin that is jumping out and then back down under the water as a helpful way to know where to put the next stitch. By presenting skills through stories and imagery, Waldorf education engages the child's imagination, and learning becomes both meaningful and memorable. Thursday, we were once again able to enjoy the creek, and it’s wonderful to see as the children increase in confidence and skill with changing out of their wet clothes. It’s good practice to keep extra clothes in their backpacks so the children can enjoy the creek to the fullest extent.

Day of Courage is this coming Friday, September 18th. Although kindergarten’s celebrations look different than those of our grade students, this is still an important time of year as the children are encouraged to find their inner strength as we prepare for the shorter, chillier months of winter. Our story during this time is about a little hummingbird who is the only animal brave enough to try and help extinguish a fire that’s raging in his forest home while all the other, bigger and stronger animals sit by, too afraid to help. Through his courage, he rallies the other inhabitants of the forest to find their own inner bravery and help to gather water to put out the fire together. This is a folktale from Ecuador that reminds little ones to find their own inner strength even if they feel they are too small to make a change. Using natural materials, including yellow marigolds and goldenrod, the children will dye cotton cloths to make golden capes. Once finished, they can wear these capes to school all week, especially on Friday, as a reminder to be courageous.

A Song from Circle

When the heat of the summer made drowsy the land,

A dragonfly came and sat on my hand.

With its blue jointed body

And wings like spun glass,

It lit through my fingers

As though they were grass.

Class Reminders and Announcements:

Friday, September 18, will be a half day for all students, and rest mats for full day students will be sent home to be washed over break. Please have your child wear red.

Roots & Rhythm: We are excited to welcome Mari Cooper to our community! Throughout this school year, she will be leading an eight-session parent education series. With extensive experience in Waldorf education, Mari will invite participants to explore the “why” behind what we do through music, movement, and meaningful discussion. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the roots of our curriculum while connecting with other parents in our community.

Participation is expected for all new parents, and all parents are encouraged to join!  as part of our commitment to building a shared understanding of the philosophy and practices that guide our school. We look forward to supporting you on this beautiful journey of parenting!
