Fourth & Fifth Grade: September 7-11, 2026
Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your evening to attend our Curriculum Night! It was a pleasure to meet with you and share our exciting plans for this school year!
This week, the class focused on the geography of Georgia. We began the week by observing different types of maps of the state: road maps, county maps, topographical maps, and more! By looking at both the road and county map simultaneously, students were tasked with identifying the counties of cities outside of our home metropolitan area, such as Augusta, Savannah, and Columbus.
From there, the class began designing their map of Georgia, highlighting the state’s major geographic features, such as the mountainous north, the Piedmont region, which covers our area, the coastal plains and Sea Islands in the southern part of the state, and the neighboring states: Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina. Then, we redrew the same map but with the borders of the Native American groups such as the Cherokee, Muscogee, and Oconee Nations. After looking at both maps side by side, the class gained a better understanding of how these nations lived and navigated throughout the land. As the class continues their reading of Soft Rain, students can better visualize what the journey across the terrain was like for her and her family.
In Cyber Civics, the students began creating their own kindness journals, where they will write about an act of kindness that they have done and how they believe the recipient felt from that kind gesture. As we progress through the Digital On-Ramps series, we will learn how values like kindness can be transferred into the digital space.
During our morning circle, the Fourth and Fifth graders began working on a rhythmic bean bag tossing activity. Over time, we will build on the challenges and add more to the choreography as spatial awareness and coordination skills grow. Check out the video below from our second day of practice.
Class Reminders and Announcements:
Roots & Rhythm: We are excited to welcome Mari Cooper to our community! Throughout this school year, she will be leading an eight-session parent education series. With extensive experience in Waldorf education, Mari will invite participants to explore the “why” behind what we do through music, movement, and meaningful discussion. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the roots of our curriculum while connecting with other parents in our community.
Participation is expected for all new parents, and all parents are encouraged to join! as part of our commitment to building a shared understanding of the philosophy and practices that guide our school. We look forward to supporting you on this beautiful journey of parenting!
