Kindergarten Dragonflies: September 14-18, 2026
Dear Dragonfly Families,
Welcome back! Hopefully, the break week was both restful and enjoyable for you and your families. Before the respite, the students enjoyed the puppet show of our courageous hummingbird and were delighted to act out the story themselves. All students also persevered and completed their sewing handwork projects. Their ability to understand the running stitch was impressive and their confidence and capability will only grow as the year progresses. In celebration of Day of Courage, the children dyed cotton capes in a dye bath made from marigolds and turmeric. One by one the students put a cloth into the dye and gave it a gentle stir. After letting it soak for a while to absorb as much color as possible, they then moved it to a cold water tub and rung it out before hanging the capes to dry in the sun. On Thursday, the capes were finally completed and each student was ‘knighted’ and adorned in a cape. Also on Thursday, the class enjoyed choosing a spot in our forest classroom which will be their own drawing spot for the remainder of the school year. On Monday, we celebrated Liesl’s fourth birthday with her family. Happy Birthday, Liesl!
As we gently transition into the autumn season, our story for this two week cycle is the legend of how the apple got its star. Next week we will explore the story and see if the legend is true by sampling a variety of seasonal apples. Look for a signup in OneSpot to pick a type of apple to bring for the students to enjoy. Teachers will chop the apple down the middle to find the star, but the children will chop the apples into smaller pieces to practice fine motor skills and strengthen muscles in their hands. For handwork, the class will practice wet felting and make small apples with its very own star inside. Wet felting is another good exercise for students to work on their fine motor skills as well as improve their patience and focus as the process requires sustained, gentle effort in order to make the shape that they desire. Our circle has changed this week alongside the season, and students will enjoy learning new songs that we will sing through October.
A Song from Circle:
Grey squirrel, grey squirrel swish your bushy tail
Grey squirrel, grey squirrel swish your bushy tail
Climb up the tallest tree
Let your tail blow in the breeze
Hide your nuts both near - and far
But don’t forget just where they are!
In the winter, you will need to find those nuts
So you can feed.
