First Grade: September 14-18, 2026

Dear First Grade Families,

Welcome back from Fall Break! It was wonderful to see all the students on campus again. Today, First Grade started their math block by estimating and counting.

The week prior to break concluded the first Language Arts block. The students learned the letters G, F, and P, which means they have experienced B, M, D, N, R, L, G, F, and P. To practice letter correct formation, the students drew in the sand, built letters with woodchips, and traced them in the air and on classmates' backs. Their favorite practice activity by far was trying to write letters with their feet. This required teamwork, focus, and determination. In pairs, one student held the paper while the others did their best to draw letters by holding the crayon in their toes. Practicing letter forms with the feet and toes helps First Graders develop body awareness, coordination, and a deeper kinesthetic understanding of letter shapes through movement-based learning. Plus, it is lots of fun and filled with laughter.

First Grade worked steadily to prepare for the Day of Courage. The class spent time learning the words, motions, and tune to new songs to sing with the rest of the Grades. They also made bracelets as gifts to the Third Graders to give them courage on their quest. Their practice paid off, and during the Day of Courage Ceremony. First Grade was strong in their singing and motions. They were very proud to give their Third Graders a bracelet to help them defeat the mighty dragon. To bring the theme of defeating the dragon into class, Two Brothers was read aloud this week. This story details the lives of two brothers, one of whom must fight a dragon to save a princess before he figures out how to save his brother, who has been turned to stone.
