This past week the second grade class had a fun and busy week back at school. We began a math block which will focus on addition and subtraction through understanding place value and regrouping. We played several math games that help build and refresh our developing skills. Learning basic math facts by rote is the foundation for higher level math. In the same way that beginner readers need to memorize sight words, memorizing math facts is as important. Please help your child by practicing using math flash cards and games at home.
This week we will continue to learn and play many math games, work on basic math facts and practice adding and subtracting both one and two-digit numbers. We will continue reading the Just So stories by Rudyard Kipling. We start each story by sharing what we know about the animal in the story and then learn a few more interesting facts as well.
Winter is back this week in all its glory! Please send your child in layers!!
With gratitude,
Melissa
