Sixth Grade: August 14-18; 2023

Dear Sixth Grade Families,

We had a busy and productive first full week of school! In our Main Lesson, the students each chose a stone to identify by looking at some of the same characteristics used by geologists, such as color, luster, transparency, and hardness. The students recorded a description and drawing of their stone, and with the help of a rock identification app, we learned each stone’s identity. On Friday, we placed all our stones into a rock tumbler, and over the following weeks, we will check on their progress as they are tumbled and polished! We learned about the rock cycle and the three types of rocks; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, and volcanoes!

The students were given an assignment book this past week. They recorded their first assignment: study for the spelling quiz on Monday. In these books, they will keep notes of their homework assigned, work to be completed at home, spelling lists, and more. While we will not have daily homework, the students will begin to learn to help organize and track their work. Please help your student at home by reminding them to return their assignment notebook to their backpacks as soon as they have finished using them. Learning good habits regarding homework should start early for the best success!
