Kindergarten Honeybees: April 29 - May 3, 2024

Greetings, Honeybee Families.

It’s hard to believe we are in the last couple of weeks of school! It has been a lovely and smooth school year and we feel so grateful to have spent it together in our beautiful forest space. Last week, the children experienced a new area in our creek. We played further downstream, with more space to run about and play in the water. The water was shallow enough so the children could walk across to the other side. A large moss-covered felled tree was in the water, which the children turned into a sea monster. The children covered it with sand and used their buckets to clean it off by pouring water over it. Beautiful rocks were collected, stacked, and used for building moats and castles.

We have been hearing a Barred owl near our forest space in the mornings. It finally revealed itself to the children and they were delighted at the sight of the large feathered creature. It’s so wonderful to have the opportunity to experience nature in real-time. It never gets old! We have been seeing many caterpillars and butterflies in our forest, which fit the theme of our story. The students have been listening to a story about a caterpillar who munched on forest leaves until she became sleepy and built herself a chrysalis. The caterpillar wrapped herself cozy and fell into a deep sleep, where she dreamt of flying around the forest. Upon awakening, she realized something felt different. When she emerged from her chrysalis, she discovered her beautiful blue and black wings, which shone in the sunlight.

On Thursday, we celebrated our dear Kaya’s birthday. Her parents and siblings joined us and shared with us precious stories of her birth and childhood.

Happy birthday, Kaya!

We have some fun activities planned for next week, the last week of school! Please read the following for further details:

  • During the final week of school, we will NOT have our usual shared snack (no veggies or apples are needed). Please be sure to send your child with a snack from home each day.

  • Students will need creek shoes and a change of clothes every day, as we will play at the creek as often as possible.

  • Monday and Tuesday, 5/13 and 14, students are invited to bring a favorite stuffed animal from home. Stuffed animals should easily fit in backpacks and be OK to get dirty.

  • Wednesday, 5/15, is FIELD DAY! Students who do not attend school on Wednesdays are welcome to join us from morning drop off until 12:30 pm, our half-day pick-up. On field day, we will participate in outdoor games and activities as a class, visit the creek, and enjoy Outshine popsicles provided by the school.  Kindergarten will be dismissed at half day this day.

  • Thursday and Friday, 5/16 and 17, we will share watermelon along with enjoying our snack from home.

We are looking forward to a week of special activities before we say goodbye for the summer.

  • Please send two full water bottles to school daily; students feel the warmer temperatures and drink a lot of water!
