Fourth Grade: October 11 - 14

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

This past week we began a math block by reviewing tricks for the multiplication tables and how to multiply by numbers ending with zero. We then reviewed multiplying a single-digit number by a two-digit and three-digit number.  To support the students' success, each child was given a fact table for multiplying numbers 1-12 (with the answers).  This allows students who have not yet mastered their facts a fast and stress-free way to solve the basic calculations correctly.  This is necessary for answering higher-level equations accurately.  Having access to the answers for basic facts allows students to focus on the steps and increases success, confidence, and enjoyment as they learn the process.  This chart also encourages and supports memorization of the basic facts through repetition of seeing the equation and answer. We ended the week learning the processes to multiply two-digit numbers with two- or three-digit numbers.

Next week, we will continue working on the multiplication of larger numbers and begin to learn the steps for long division.  Once we have completed this introduction, the students will continue to work on these new skills during their math mornings each week.
