Dear Second Grade Families,
This week, the second grade refreshed their knowledge of place value. The class used rocks and glass gems to count different amounts of objects by sorting them into tens and ones. They put groups of tens into little gauze bags, counted the tens and ones, and wrote down the matching two-digit number. This experience helped the students understand the significance of place value in a visual, kinesthetic, and concrete manner. Stories about picking cherries and a visit to an apple orchard accompanied the week. Do not be surprised if your children ask you to drive up to an apple orchard or bake an apple pie!
During free time, the students were busy building a fort and a shelter with materials they found in the forest. The buildings have become quite strong, with windows, thick walls, and sturdy roofs. The students were very excited they found animal bones on our campus. One of them looked very curious and turned out to be a piece of a snapping turtle skeleton. On Monday, we welcomed Henry to our second-grade class. The week ended with a celebration of Pipor’s 8th birthday and a big splash in the creek on Friday afternoon. It was a wonderfully warm and sunny early fall day, reminiscent of the summer!
Welcome to our class, Henry! Happy birthday, Pipor!
