Kindergarten Turtles: October 3-7, 2022

Greetings Turtle Families!

It was wonderful to welcome everyone back to school after our break.  The children enjoyed a week full of chilly mornings and lovely, sunshine-filled afternoons.  Thank you for dressing them in layers.  Everyone seemed comfortable during the cold mornings and by snack, we were able to start shedding layers, as the temperature rose. With the cooler autumn weather, we also have lots of leaves blanketing our forest floor.  The children worked together to rake a huge pile of leaves!  They then jumped in it and had fun tossing the leaves into the air to run through them. Once finished, together they would rake the leaves into a pile again and repeat their game.  They did this over and over all week long. Many students went home with leaves in their hair, a sign of the autumn fun they were having at school.

Our story this past week was about a little red house with no windows and no doors and a star hidden inside. The students were amazed to cut open an apple each day and find the star.  We shared apple slices on Thursday and Friday.  There were several varieties of apples and it was fun to taste the differences – some very sweet, some kind of tart.  We also used one of the cut apples as a stamp and made apple prints.

On Thursday and Friday, we visited the farm.  Mr. Matan, our Environmental Education teacher, needed help, on Thursday,  cleaning out the nesting area in the chicken coop.  The students removed the old straw, put it in a wagon, wheeled it to the compost, and emptied it.  Then they put fresh straw into the coop for the chickens.  The children were all so excited to help.  We were also able to harvest some radishes and lettuce from the garden.  It was a very exciting day!
