Dear Fifth Grade Families,
This week we focused on triangles during our morning Main Lesson. After learning the six types of triangles, we went on to understand more about angles, and using a protractor, practiced measuring them. We made interesting design with triangles following specific directions as well as making many freehand geometrical designs. We learned how surveyors measure long distances and practiced using our shadows to measure tall objects. Through these experiences, direct instruction, artistic renderings, engaging activities, and stories, students experience geometry more deeply than simply memorizing factual information. These activities give students a more meaningful understanding of geometry that arises from within themselves making a more lasting impression that will shine through in their later mathematical years.
Next week, we will spend a few days completing our first geometry block and then begin our study of Ancient India. In our Morning circle, we will continue to practice math facts, recite verses, and build connections, both neurologically and as a class community, as we learn more intricate patterns bouncing balls together. Please have your student to school by 8:35 AM each school morning to be a part of this important learning and social development period.
I look forward to seeing you all at our Parent-Curriculum night tomorrow at 6:00 pm, and talking together about the year to come. Please plan to meet at the picnic table closest to the field by 6:00. We will head to our outdoor classroom. Bug spray is suggested.
