Dear Third and Fourth-Grade Families,
The class had a wonderful week ringing in the fall season before the break. We discussed farming in our main lesson and learned a poem about harvest time. The class simultaneously prepared for the Day of Courage, a festival in honor of St. Michael and his subduing the Dragon. On Friday, we celebrated the festival, which holds a special meaning for the second graders. When the second-grade students entered the Dragon’s lair to retrieve precious gems, our class did very well supporting them in their endeavor. At the end of the day, we met some delightful high school students from Academe of the Oaks, the Waldorf high school in Decatur, who played various fun games with the grades on the playground.
During handwork, the third- and fourth-grade students were excited to finger knit golden crowns for the second-grade to give the students strength and encouragement when searching for hidden gems in the Dragon’s cave. The crowns turned out to be beautiful, and it was nice to watch how each student freely gave away a precious item they had proudly made by hand to one of the second graders during the Day of Courage ceremony. In our painting lesson, the students painted a picture of Saint Michael fighting the Dragon. Each of the thirteen dragons turned out to look very different, and each student took their painting home.
When we return to school after fall break, we will experience a shift to fall weather. Please send your child to school dressed in layers, as it can be chilly in the mornings! Your child may bring a small blanket to school if desired. Rain boots at school are essential now.
Enjoy the fall break! We will see each other again at the Garden School on October 4!
