Hello Second Grade Families,
Last week we continued working with words from The Ants and the Grasshopper, and we increased our word bank with words from The Crow and the Pitcher and The Brahmin and His Ox. Not only do these stories give us many words to use for our sight word board game, but they also have embedded lessons about treating others with respect and refusing to let an obstacle stop the work of finding a solution. The students drew pictures from our stories and created many new sentences with our words. We also worked on learning sounds made from various spelling patterns and with letters that combine to make a specific sound.
This week we are hearing the story of The Horse and the Overloaded Donkey along with the story of The Frog and the Mouse. We are using flash cards to reinforce sight words, and we are working on spelling. Our spelling and reading this week will integrate the use of digraphs which are the sounds certain combined letters make (/sh/, /ch/, etc.).
This year seems to have gotten cold fast. However, the students are not at all affected by the chilly mornings. We have kept busy, so we have not yet had a need for a morning fire. However, we are sure to be starting our mornings with some added warmth from our classroom fire soon.
