Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
This past week, the class continued with our block on fractions. The students explored finding equivalent fractions (for example, 1/4 = 2/8 ) by multiplying the numbers on the top and the bottom of a given fraction with the same number. They found that as long as they multiply the numerator and denominator of a given fraction with the same number, the size of the resulting fraction remains the same. The students also practiced transforming fractions with different denominators to fractions with common denominators. Now, the class is simplifying fractions and will study simple multiplication and division with fractions. Following our Math Block, the class will start with the second Norse Myths block. We will continue to work in our fractions workbooks during extra main lessons.
In Mandarin with Ki Cerina, the students have finished the work with the Chinese abacus. The students have come far in practicing the multiplication tables with Ki Cerina. Using the Chinese abacus has helped the students deepen their multiplication skills, which supports their developing mathematical skills in class as well. The Mandarin class is now changing focus back to language arts and concentrating more on the spoken language.
