Hello Second Grade Families,
Last week was busy even though it was a shorter week. In Second Grade, we hear many fables as the students resonate with the mischief in these stories and with the morals hidden within. In Waldorf, we do not directly teach the morals to the children; we allow them to bring these stories into their sleep and trust that each student will arrive at the conclusion that best meets their needs. Our class discussions demonstrate this. This past week, we focused on two fables, providing our practice reading material and words for writing and spelling. The stories we heard were The Fox and the Grapes and The Elephant and the Beetle. These stories also gave us many new words to use for sight words. The class played the game of Bingo to reinforce the sight words learned. We also worked on “vowel teams” (i.e. /ai/, /oa/) and the sounds they make, along with words that use those vowel teams. This week, we are reading two new stories, The Three Fish and The Ant and the Grasshopper. We will continue to use Bingo to help with sight words and play a sight word recognition game with large-size words using chalk on the pavement.
It was nice to have everyone back from their break. The students were glad to be back together and even shared the excitement of a classmate losing a tooth. The cooler air has been enjoyable, and we see signs of Fall as we explore our campus.
