Hello, Second Grade Families,
Last week, we heard the stories of The Tortoise and the Hare and The Three Little Pigs. These stories gave us new words to recognize, spell, and use in writing sentences. We used clay to create characters from that story to help us connect with The Tortoise and the Hare. Clay modeling engages a child’s will. Rather than pulling pieces off and sticking them back on, the students work with a single, whole piece of clay and slowly model until the form of the animal emerges. The Waldorf curriculum thoughtfully weaves imagination, artistic activities, and academics together in such a way as to meet students with different learning styles. It is a gentle approach to learning that keeps a child’s imagination, curiosity, and interest equally engaged.
This week, we will start our first Math Block. We will begin by reviewing math skills introduced and learned during first grade to ensure a foundation is in place. Moving forward, we will focus on the processes for multi-digit addition and subtraction. We will use a variety of math games to assist in understanding the new material.
As we transition from a language block with a focus on reading and writing to a math block, it remains important to practice sight words and writing skills at home. Reading is learned most effectively through writing. Please support your child to write notes and letters to those around them (pets included!).
This Wednesday evening is our Grades Curriculum Night at 6 pm. We will do some activities and take a deeper dive into the curriculum and what parents can expect for the first grade year. We look forward to seeing you on campus for this adults only event.
