Hello, Second Grade Families,
Last week, the students showed off their ability to remember previously learned math skills and to learn new math facts. We practiced using all four math operations with a focus on addition. In class, we used math flash cards to encourage memorization of basic math equations. The students had a lot of fun playing math games using a deck of cards. With the deck of cards, the students were given a number and then had to find two or more cards with numbers that, when added together, would equal the number given. This game gave students an opportunity to see a whole number first and then look to see which “parts” create the whole number. Working from the whole to part is a valuable and unique component of the Waldorf curriculum.
This week, we continue to work on math facts and will use items we find in our environment to help visualize various math facts. We will explore our environment to collect natural math manipulatives like sticks, rocks, and pieces of clay. The students will use these items to reinforce the math skills and lessons we are learning. We will also play hopscotch and card games to again reinforce the lessons using our bodies and hands.
It was great to see everyone at Curriculum Night and to have the opportunity to give you a glimpse into the classroom. The students continue to work hard, and of course, practicing at home will reinforce the work they do during the day. Please continue to help your child to begin to memorize basic math facts!
Announcements and Reminders:
Please send your child in with bug spray; the mosquitos are active! The Repel brand seems to be the most effective.
Bring rain and creek gear, including boots, daily! These can be left at school and stored in the shed.
Hard-soled, closed-toe water shoes or old sneakers are required at Creekcess.
Please send your child with an extra, labeled sweater or light jacket as the days are turning cooler, especially in the forest.
