Hello, Second Grade Families,
The class once again heard the story of Madge the Magpie. Madge, a helpful bird, tried to teach other birds all the steps of how to build the perfect nest. A variety of birds showed up for the lesson, but one by one, the different birds got bored and left. The class drew a picture of the various birds gathered around Madge the Magpie. Each day, the students drew a new picture, and each picture showed one less bird listening to Madge. Removing a different bird in each picture represents each bird leaving at different phases in Madge Magpie’s nest-building lesson.
The class was excited to read through the script for our class play last week. We used lines in the play for our composition sentences. Everyone seems excited to start practicing. This week, the students will start reciting lines in the play. We will continue to develop our writing skills by using Madge the Magpie for composition sentences. Additionally, the class will start reading the reader, Jake the Snake. This story will be read as the students follow along from the copy of the story handed out to them, allowing the students to read along successfully and confidently. The additional benefit is that as they listen to the story, the students also see the words as they are being read. We plan to spend some time painting during our extra Main Lesson periods as well.
In celebration of Spring, our class has decided to try to grow an avocado tree from a seed that was brought into the classroom. We have propped the seed with toothpicks in a jar with water in the bottom. Hopefully, we will be successful. As a reminder, please keep sending water, rain gear, and a full lunch. Additionally, it would be beneficial to help your student practice the play at home every day.

Dress for the weather with layers and send in full rain gear daily (raincoat, rain pants, and boots).
If your child is feeling under the weather, please keep them home to help keep our community healthy.
