Weekly Highlight September 2024: Music

Greetings from the Music Room,

First and Second/Third Grades have Music twice a week. In addition to learning seasonal and festival-related songs, the classes have now started to play the pentatonic flute. So far, the students love the sound and feel of the flutes made of natural cherry wood, and they have already learned to play a few notes on them. Characterized by its five-note scale, the pentatonic flute allows beginning players to produce harmonious and melodious sounds right from the start, fostering an intuitive sense of rhythm and melody.

Warmly,

Ki Gaby

We are off to a fun and productive star in the upper grades. The Fourth and Fifth Grade students have been working on learning chords and being able to play songs on their ukuleles. The Sixth and Seventh Graders are developing basic drumstick techniques and learning to read rhythms. Both classes have been developing their listening skills and ability to talk about music through songs they have chosen to share with the class. We started with no limits to their choices (except that the music be family friendly) and moved on to music from another language and/or culture. So far, the students have done a terrific job bringing their supplies to class. Thank you and please keep up the good work of remembering instruments and have fun playing at home!

Till next time,

Ki Ben
