Middle School: September 29 - October 3, 2025

Hello, Middle School Families,

The students are off to a terrific start in their Geometry Main Lesson blocks!

Ki Melissa's math class began with a review of lines and angles, including measuring angles with protractors. The study of the circle quickly followed, and much of the focus will remain there. Using a compass and a straight-edge, students worked with the six divisions of a circle and artistically shaded in the shapes that arose from their designs, paying attention to color and design. In addition to exploring geometrical concepts, the students are learning and reviewing decimal concepts via the Key to Decimal workbook series, which includes nightly homework. To highlight the history of geometry, the book String, Straightedge, and Shadow: The Story of Geometry, written by Julia E. Diggins, is read to the class while they work on their geometrical constructions.

Ki Lesley’s Math class has delved into the study of 2-D and 3-D figures. Starting with Loci, students worked in groups to problem-solve solutions of several different scenarios. Given a set of constraints/conditions, they work together to find the locus of points that would satisfy all the conditions. The second part of this block is an exploration of Stereometry, where the class examines 3-D shapes, with a focus on the Platonic and Archimedean solids.  Using clay to create a cube, the class was able to observe and discern the specific qualities of this regular shape. Over the course of three days, students worked with clay to transform the cube into a tetrahedron and analyzed the dual relationship of these two polyhedra. The Block Project will be the creation of a mobile of Platonic Solids.

Kingdom of Halloween is around the corner! This coming Saturday, October 11, is a community work day for preparation for the Festival. The Middle School is hosting this work day, and we hope to see you there.

In addition, as part of the fundraiser for the Bake Sale, each student is asked to make at least one pie (if not two!) for the Kingdom of Halloween. The proceeds earned by your child’s class during the bake sale go towards their Eighth Grade field trip. This year, we will be making both Apple and Pumpkin pies. Please sign up here. Recipes included in the link.

Announcements & Reminders:

School Pictures will be on Thursday, October 9th. These will be individual photos only. In the Spring, we will take the class picture and any makeup photos.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are this week, October 9 and 10th. Thank you, everyone, for signing up!

  • October 9: Class Pictures/Parent Conferences (Half Day)

  • October 10: Parent Conferences (No School)

  • October 11: Community Work Day Hosted by Middle School

  • October 18: Kingdom of Halloween: 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
