Second & Third Grade: October 6 - 10, 2025
Dear Second and Third Grade Families,
Thank you to everyone who attended parent conferences last week. It is a pleasure to work with each of you to support your child’s growth as a team.
We began our Fables Block with the stories “The Frogs Who Wished for a King” and “The Mouse and the Lion.” The children enjoyed the antics of the silly frogs, who, as one student put it, “should have just been happy for what they had to begin with!” Fables help teach lessons about choices and consequences, empathy, and the difference between right and wrong. The mischievous behavior of the animals often mirrors the behavior of Second and Third Grade students, who are frequently at a developmental stage of testing boundaries.
After each fable, rather than immediately discussing the moral in class, students are encouraged to retell the story to their families at home and explore the lesson together. The following day, children are invited to share what they discussed with their families. The desire is for the child to come to their own conclusion and find the moral within each fable on their own. Even if they do not reach a conclusion immediately, we believe the story and intended lesson will live within each child and guide them when the time is right.
Our Fables Block is supported by reading and writing lessons. Last week, we reviewed spelling patterns from our first block. This week, we are adding new patterns, including diphthongs. These are sounds made by the combination of two vowels, such as oi in coin, ou in loud, and oo in food. We will also focus on sentence structure and introduce foundational grammar skills.
To celebrate the fall season, we will have pumpkin carving this Friday at 1:20 PM. Please send a pumpkin with your child this week. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to join. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to the email I sent to ensure there is adequate space for each family.
Announcements & Reminders:
