Kindergarten Chickadees: November 10-14, 2025
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
The chilly weather during the early part of the week brought the Chickadees indoors, where they engaged in several different crafts and activities that focused on developing fine motor skills. Students laced animal cards and put together puzzles. They drew, colored, cut out shapes with scissors, and painted as they worked to create a special craft to share with their families during the luncheon. The students also used story stones for the first time, selecting stones with unique pictures and adding them one at a time while sharing a sentence that both complemented the picture and continued a story from the previous stone. This collaborative storytelling activity is wonderful for building creativity, memory, and critical thinking skills.
Outdoors, the class focused on practical tasks that served the dual purpose of building gross motor skills and keeping the children’s bodies warm. The students used a hack saw, with teacher assistance and supervision, to cut a thin fallen tree into lengths short enough to use in their fort building. The children also used hammers to break up the two remaining pumpkins in our outdoor classroom to observe what would happen. They then took the pieces to share with the goats, donkeys, and chickens at the farm and to add to the compost. Practical work is an important part of Waldorf Early Childhood education. It allows young children to feel a sense of connection with and responsibility to their family, class, and the world around them. Practical work also teaches important life skills such as sewing, cleaning, fixing items, and caring for plants and animals. The earlier these skills are introduced, the easier it will be for the child to carry and continue to develop them throughout their lifetime. This part of a holistic education helps students appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world and their place in it.
