Fourth & Fifth Grade: October 13 - 17, 2025
Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,
We hope you enjoyed the Kingdom of Halloween. Your presence and support was very much appreciated! The class had a wonderful time carving pumpkins and felt proud to be able to contribute decorations for the fairytale walk.
This week the class dove into learning about infant-like plants such as mosses, ferns, lichens, and horsetails, as well as the basics of a tree’s structure. One plant fact that many students found to be mind-blowing was the fact that bog moss can create a quicksand-like effect if stepped on!
To tie plant studies into grammar, the students learned about similes and metaphors. They explored the forest, found natural items and created sentences using these figures of speech. Then, the students combined their nature pieces together to create a boat. We put the strength of the makeshift boat to the test by seeing if it would sail away in the creek. The end result was a success! As a way to keep a memory of their creation, the class created a poster drawing and wrote simile and metaphor sentences to accompany them.
While learning new fun facts about non-flowering plants, we also checked in on our strawberry preservation experiment. The students observed noticeable changes compared to the previous week such as the strawberries looking dehydrated and small bubbles forming at the top of the jar. This was their first look of what the fermentation process can look like with fruits. Next week, the students will get more of an understanding of this as we dive into learning about decomposers: Earth’s natural garbage disposal system.
