First Grade: September 29 - October 3, 2025
Dear First Grade Families,
Your children came back to school last week after their break so gracefully. They joyously reunited with their friends, remembered their routines and rules (for the most part!), and demonstrated exceptional commitment to their work. Students observed how the sun was lower in the sky, in addition to numerous other changes, including plant growth and new mushrooms that had emerged in their absence. The forest will start looking more autumnal soon!
The class has become more adept at counting and adding numerals as well as exploring the concepts of addition and subtraction. They especially enjoyed a math beanbag exercise whereby they counted to 100 using different hand movements, often crossing the midline, and finally tossing their beanbags high and catching them upon reaching 100. Thank you to those families who have sent in acorns for the class to use as math manipulatives. They are a reminder of the majestic tree whence they came, the mighty oak, as well as lovely to feel in one’s hands. Students practiced one-to-one correspondence when counting the acorns, practiced managing them responsibly, and noticed equal division and other groupings.
Each day during lunch, the class listens to a chapter or two of our current read-aloud, The Enchanted Wood by British author Enid Blyton, published in 1939. While listening to the adventures of siblings Joe, Beth, and Frannie, set in the English countryside and a magical world, imaginations are engaged and minds stimulated by the language heard. This week, the class has passed the midpoint of the book and is wrapping up their Math block before returning next week to Language Arts during the Main Lesson.
