Second & Third Grade: September 29 - October 3, 2025
Dear Second and Third Grade Families,
We returned from fall break and completed our Heroes block. The children learned about environmentalists such as Julia Butterfly Hill and Kate Sessions. They discussed ways that they help take care of the planet, such as keeping the forest clean, and were proud to understand that they are becoming environmentalists as well!
Last week was also spent reviewing math skills. Second Graders focused on addition and subtraction without regrouping, while Third Graders worked with regrouping. Additionally, the entire class is practicing multiplication facts, with a special focus on the three times tables. While our next block will have a focus on reading and writing skills, we will continue to practice math skills on a daily basis.
On Wednesday, we reached a significant class milestone: 100 hours spent outside. This year, the children are tracking how much time we spend outdoors each day. On average, we have been outside for about three hours daily. Now that the weather is beautiful and our Main Lessons are primarily outdoors, we expect the next hundred hours to fly by. As a reminder, more time outdoors means more gear should come to school. Please send a light jacket with your child and dress them in layers. Sending in a small blanket is acceptable as well. The mornings are quite cool in the forest, while the afternoons can be hot at pickup.
This week, we are beginning our Fables block. The children will hear stories such as “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” “The Mouse and the Lion,” and “The Fox Without a Tail.” This block will be accompanied by a continued focus on reading and writing skills, including spelling patterns, sentence structure, and paragraph formation.
Announcements & Reminders:
Send in bug spray or cream, two water bottles, and a jacket each day.
School Pictures will be on Thursday, October 9th. These will be individual photos only. In the Spring, we will take the class picture and any makeup photos.
