Dear First Grade Families,
Welcome back to school after a well-earned break! The period between fall break and the Thanksgiving break is a long one, enabling the deepening of rhythms and learning. Here is hoping the holiday was comforting and peaceful for you and yours. Thank you for attending our presentation and picnic the day before the break. First Grade’s offering was skillfully performed and touching in its sincerity. Very well done!
This week marks the beginning of our third Language Arts block, this time concentrating on the five vowels. Throughout the semester, students have been asking when they will learn them, and now the wait is over! Yesterday, students heard their names spoken without vowels to their great amusement. The exercise highlighted the importance of vowels and spawned further exploration of words minus their vowel sounds. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the children identified emotions associated with pure vowel sounds (such as “ah” for surprise and “ugh” for disgust). In Waldorf education, the vowels are introduced after the consonants with an emphasis on the feeling quality of these five letters.

Next week’s tours are designed to meet your questions about the next phase of your child’s development and how the curriculum meets the changes you are starting to see now. A Kindergarten tour and a Grades tour will be offered on Wednesday, December 10th, at 9:30 am and Saturday, December 13th, at 10:00 am.
