Joyful Beginnings Hummingbirds: May 12-16, 2025
Dear Joyful Beginnings Hummingbird Families,
Thank you all for your generosity and thoughtfulness during Teacher Appreciation week. We are grateful for such a supportive community of families!
Last week, the Hummingbirds embraced the final story for the year, “The Mushroom in the Rain.” This sweet nature tale tells of many forest creatures finding shelter under a growing mushroom during a spring rain. At the end of the story, once the raindrops pitter-patter to a stop, the rabbit hops back to the glen, the butterfly soars back to the flower top, the mouse scampers to the field, and the blue bird flies back to the nest. The story arc is a gentle, therapeutic way of preparing the children for the close of the year when they will leave their beloved Hummingbird nest and head to their respective homes for the summer.
May showers have paved the way for plenty of muddy, sensory play. The children have grown extremely confident in their forest environment. Rain or shine, they are hanging on vines, digging tunnels, building stick shelters, and hunting for the ever-elusive rolly pollies. Please continue to send your child with their rain gear each day. Even on dry days, we may incorporate water into forest free play!
Next week is our final week together for the semester! While maintaining the semblance of rhythm, we will lean into the energy of the last week of school with some fun additions. Please let us know if your child should not consume any of the snacks mentioned below.
Monday, 5/19: Bring a baby photo to share with the class! We will reflect on each student’s growth and measure how tall they are, marking it on one of the trees in our nest. Watermelon for snack!
Tuesday, 5/20: Chalk art and banana caterpillars for snack. (Bananas, sunbutter, chocolate chips, and two pretzel sticks)
Wednesday, 5/21: Laundry Day and popsicles. We will bring soapy water down to the forest and have fun hand washing our linens, dishes, and shovels!
