First Grade: May 12-16, 2025
Dear First Grade Families,
How can it be that we are reaching the end of First Grade? This year has gone by very quickly, exemplifying that expression about time flying when fun is had! Last week, the class consolidated their knowledge of sight words and phonics as they continued writing the story of “The Three Bears.” Capitalizing names and the leading letter of each sentence, along with adding periods at the end, is coming more naturally to students. They enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of reading to themselves and aloud to their teacher and peers. In addition to the skills review involved in completing their reader, the class has been reviewing Math through the game of Pig, an exciting blend of chance, strategy, and addition. Students roll a die to gain points, but all points gained in a round are lost if a “one” is rolled! They enjoy flirting with risk as they keep rolling, hoping against hope that they do not roll the dreaded “one”! Sometimes, the risk pays off, and they get lucky with lots of “fives” and “sixes,” with the aim of reaching 100 points.
On Friday, we celebrated Paloma’s summer birthday with a tasty treat and the joy of welcoming her to age seven. Around the age of seven (with variation between individuals, of course), children have undergone amazing changes which mean they are truly ready for academic learning! It is a privilege to initiate children into the Grades program. The children deserve to be very proud of themselves. Friday also saw an exuberant First Grade indulging in Creekcess, followed by the Fourth/Fifth Grade dress rehearsal. When watching performances by the older classes, students get a glimpse of what is ahead of them on their Grades journey. There is so much to look forward to!
