Speciality Highlight Apirl 2026: Handwork

Handwork: Spring Semester

When students complete their projects, they are invited to display their work at the front desk so the whole school can enjoy their creations. Students can be proud of their progress. A special thank you to Gabby for letting us take over the front desk from time to time.

First Grade

Right now, all of the students are knitting. Congratulations, First graders! After making a small knitted pocket for the pocket baby gifted to them by the Middle School class, each child started knitting a cat, bear, or owl made from one large knitted rectangle. The students are really enjoying discovering that the rectangle needs to measure from their fingertips to their elbow. Then they will sew it together and shape it into the chosen animal.

The class also took a short break from their main handwork project to work on their auction project.

Second and Third Grade

The Second and Third graders took a break from their main project to work on a class auction project by knitting animals for the farm theme. The students became so attached to the animals they chose that for an additional project each student was allowed to make another one for themselves. The class is almost done with the auction project.

Fourth and Fifth Grade

The Fourth Graders are continuing their work on crossstitching bookmarks, choosing their own color combinations and patterns with a few guidelines. The Fifth Graders are completing their mini-me dolls and fingerless gloves. The students are looking forward to seeing the results of their work. Having a smaller class gives a lot of flexibility. Most of the handwork class has been spent outdoors, where it is easier to move around, and the class has really been enjoying the spring weather.

Sixth and Seventh Grade

All of the students finished studying chickens, creating a chicken pattern, and sewing their own unique designs. Well done, Middle School!

Now the students are working on creating a goat or a donkey. The most challenging part of this project is making the gussets. This takes careful thought about three-dimensional form and structure so that the animal can stand properly.

It is exciting to see the donkey and goat come to form as the students work.

Eighth Grade

Much progress has been made as each member of the class learns to master the sewing machine! Students now feel confident setting up the machines, starting their work, cleaning up, and putting the machines away.

Students have finished their quilted pincushions and stitch samplers, and now they are working hard on their own quilted top designs for a bag or a pillow. This project involves a lot of reworking and recalculating to make the measurements exact. It also includes practicing cutting skills and ironing skills.

We are all looking forward to seeing the finished projects.

Warmly,

Ki Ieva
