Kindergarten Chickadees: February 24 - 28, 2025

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

The Chickadees enjoyed a glorious, spring-like week in the forest. The sun and warm temperature encouraged new types of play, including building mountains and volcanoes in the sandbox, building and using balance beams and teeter-totters, and creating their own exercise classes. The outdoor classroom was filled with exuberant running and bubbling laughter all week. The children also enjoyed working on their sewing projects as they sat on a blanket spread on the ground in the sun. One of the new circle songs is about frogs waking up in the spring and emerging from the warmth of the mud to jump around in the sun. Soon after our morning circle, some students heard spring frogs calling from the marshlands. We walked to the marsh looking for frogs and learning about the sounds that spring peepers and wood frogs make!

The class was happy to return to painting this week, where they used all three primary colors to experiment with spreading and combining the colors on the wet watercolor paper. Some children connected the colors on the page with the colors of the flowers they see appearing around campus, in parks, and at their homes. They also made these connections with the flowers mentioned in the story about Lady Spring, which the students are experiencing as a puppet show this week. At the end of the story, when the sun stays bright and warm all day, flowers of every color appear around Lady Spring as she walks about the land. Some of the flowers mentioned include daffodils, pansies, violets, clovers, and dandelions.

Announcements and Reminders for Chickadee Kindergarten:

Insects will be returning soon! Please ensure your child has insect repellent in their backpack soon if they do not already. If your child is afraid of bees or other bugs, it is also a good idea to start talking at home about how they benefit our world and that they will not harm us if we leave them alone.

The sun has returned (yay!) and can be strong in the afternoon, which bothers some students’ eyes. You can send in a sun hat, baseball cap, or sunglasses if this helps your child. Sunglasses will only be worn when we are out of the forest where it is sunny. Remember, no marketed characters, please.
