Kindergarten Chickadees: March 3 - 7, 2025

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

The Chickadee class worked hard this week as they continued working on long-term projects and engaged in new activities. The students visited the farm a couple of times, petting and brushing the animals and exploring the area inside the fence. They also played in the field across from the farm and even had the opportunity to play with familiar and new friends from the Turtle and Honeybee classes while there! In the forest classroom, the most exciting part of the week was the return of our sensory swing and the extension of our class boundary to make space for the swing. The swing will be available for students during free play when it is not raining or extremely muddy. Another addition to the outdoor classroom is a large, sturdy pallet, which students helped carry and prop against some trees to provide a large wall they are using to enlarge their stick fort. Indoors, the Chickadees colored and cut out flowers, making them into springtime necklaces: one to keep and one to share. The children enjoyed this activity and were excitedly deciding who they wanted to share their necklaces with.

As the Chickadees grow and mature, they show a greater appreciation for and desire to engage in playground games like Red Light, Green Light, and tag. During short waiting times, the children also enjoy hand games such as Rock, Paper, Scissors, and I-Spy. Often, these games require the students to choose someone to start the game or be “it,” which they also enjoy and experience as an essential part of their development, particularly those students preparing to move to First Grade in the fall. Due to the problematic history of the rhyme “Eenie Meenie Miney Moe,” the class learns a fun alternative rhyme we use at school. We do not share the history of the rhyme or even that it is a problem with the students. If you would like to learn more for your personal information, you can read this article. Our class rhyme for choosing a friend is called Porcupine in Pointy Shoes:

Porcupine in pointy shoes

Which one will my pointer choose?

Pointer, pointer, stick like glue

The one my pointer picks is YOU!
