Kindergarten Chickadees: March 17-21, 2025

Osiyo, Chickadee Families,

Last week, the Chickadee students had a lot of fun building their own terrariums!  The students learned that a terrarium is a way of growing a garden in a jar and that ‘terra’ means earth. When constructing their terrariums, the children layered sand, small rocks, and potting soil to provide appropriate moisture for their seeds. They sprinkled wheat grass seeds on the soil and sprinkled a little more dirt to cover the seeds, then watered them. Students then chose a small gnome trinket and a sea shell to decorate their jars. The terrariums will be kept in a sunny spot at school, where the children will water them every other day or so and watch the grass grow. Wheat grass grows quickly; the terrariums will come home on your child’s last school day before Spring Break. You can continue caring for the grass at home by leaving it uncovered, watering every 2-3 days, and keeping it in a sunny spot. The wheat grass seeds are organic, and the grass can be eaten if you wish!

The students have shown incredible growth in their painting from the beginning of the school year. They can consistently focus on the task for more extended periods and easily follow directions. Students are rinsing Tippy the paintbrush between each dip into a paint jar, careful not to muddy the paints. The children remember how to clean up their painting supplies when they are finished, only occasionally needing reminders to push their chairs before they play. The paintings show more detail, with students painting for longer periods, using the entire paper, and some students adding techniques such as dots, swirls, lines, and designs. The class frequently enjoys painting in quiet reverence as they hear the week’s story about Tippy and her color friends: red, yellow, and blue. The children are excited to share their painting books with you at the end of the semester.

Announcements and Reminders for Chickadee Kindergarten:

  • The weather is unpredictable this time of year! Please continue to send clothing and gear for all types of weather. If your child is wearing rain or snow boots, please have them wear tall socks (well above the ankle), as short socks slip off easily inside boots, and children have to stop frequently to put them back on.

  • Grandfriend’s Day is coming soon!  Students who do not usually attend school on Friday are welcome and encouraged to attend with their special grownup friend(s) during the event.

  • 3/26: Picture Day: Class pictures and individual make-up pictures

  • 4/4: Half Day: Grandfriend’s Tea 11:00 a.m.

  • 4/7 - 4/11: Spring Break (No School)

  • 4/25: Annual Auction Fundraiser - Half Day

  • 4/26: Community Work Day

Thank you for sharing your children with us and for being part of our community.

Gyvalieliga,

Ki Holly
