Kindergarten Chickadees: January 6 - 9, 2026
Osiyo, Chickadee Families,
We hope you all had a wonderful break filled with family, rest, and fun. It was a joyful experience to have the children back on campus this week; they were greatly missed, and missed each other, as well.
This week, the students spent time reconnecting to each other, the outdoor classroom environment, and the rhythm of the school days and week. They enjoyed drawing, stretching, breathing exercises, a visit to the farm, and a nature walk. The warm and dry weather allowed the students to explore all of the different ways to play in the outside classroom, including the sandbox, digging on Honey mountain, building and driving dump trucks on roads, making forts, and experimenting with simple machines like see-saws. It will be interesting to see what adventures the rest of the month brings!
The Chickadee class is beginning the second semester listening to “The Story of Kasa Jizo”, a Japanese tale about an old man who selflessly uses his money to buy hats for the stone Jizo statues that protect the road to the village instead of buying rice to make rice cakes for New Year’s Day. He feels bad for the Kaza Jizo when he walks past them and sees that they have no protection from the wind and snow. Later that night, the old man and his wife hear a loud sound and singing in the distance. Ask your child to share the end of the story with you! Next week, they will act it out as a play. We will also enjoy rice with vegan butter and (optional) gomasio for snack next Wednesday.
