First Grade: January 6 - 9, 2026
Dear First Grade Families,
Here we are together again! We hope that your break provided abundant rest and joy for your family. The children seem more mature from their holiday experiences and interactions. When they returned to school last Tuesday, they settled right in, remembering their routines and appearing to be right at home. There has been a renewed zest in students’ play; they clearly missed one another and the forest! Many happy social moments were observed during recess where the children were mimicking each others’ ideas: tramping around with stick hiking poles, balancing a stick on their arm while standing on one foot, and turning into bunnies.
With gusto, the class has jumped back into Math after focusing on Language Arts in December. During this block, students will further develop their number sense through exploring concepts such as doubles and near doubles when composing (building) and decomposing (breaking down) numbers. Through active math activities like skip counting along a giant number line in Circle, students will strengthen their awareness of patterns and the numbers’ relationships to each other. Last week, the class was captured by a story of a rabbit family evading a fox by scurrying into their burrow. Students modeled beeswax rabbits and carrots for the story and then drew a pictorial representation of the two sister bunnies who make it into the burrow first while the parents above ground exhort the youngest bunny to drop the carrots he is munching to head for safety. There are more vibrant math stories and vignettes to come!

Please join us for our MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 19th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. You are also welcome to sign up to donate food items or drop off new socks and/or underwear during carpool any day until the 16th.
