Joyful Beginnings Hummingbirds: November 18-22, 2024
Dear Hummingbird Families,
Thank you for attending the Thanksgiving Luncheon before the break. It was lovely for the children to be able to “host” their families in their own special slice of the forest. We have enjoyed coming back together as a class after a week away!
Before the break, we shared a few cold and wet days in the forest. It is amazing to see how the children begin to notice the subtleties of the changing seasons and quietly shift their play accordingly. In cooler temperatures, they often turn to building shelters and collecting items. As rain softens the forest floor, we see some children “descending” to dig deeper holes and other children “ascending” with a sharper focus on climbing and getting their feet off the ground on wet days.
As we brought our Autumn circle and stories to a close, we also introduced finger painting. When using watercolors at this age, we paint with one single color at a time, focusing on continuity and the subtle variations of shade. This truly gives the child the “experience” of the color. With fingerpainting, however, we experimented with having the three primary colors available for use. Some of the children were thrilled to see shades of green and purple appear on their papers as they dipped and dotted away.
The next three weeks will be a joyful time of welcoming winter. Our new Winter circle and story will feature characters like King Winter and Jack Frost and will carry us through the end of the semester. As we snuggle into the season, we will enjoy a few special snacks and activities along the way. Some things we look forward to sharing together include a special, warm snack of baked cinnamon apples and a winter tea party.
