Kindergarten Honeybees: November 18-22, 2024

Dear Honeybee Families,

Thank you to everyone who was able to brave the cold and join us for our Thanksgiving picnic on Friday!

We had a fun, albeit wet, week in the Honeybees class! On Tuesday and Wednesday, we used pinecones and watercolor paintings to make turkeys. The students found pinecones in the forest and then used watercolor paintings they had previously made to cut out feathers and glue them to the back of the pinecone. They also drew faces on paper and glued them on. The students enjoyed a great deal of child-initiated and self-directed play this week. This is a fundamental part of a Waldorf Kindergarten class because it acknowledges children’s desire to play as a need. It helps to cultivate creativity, independence, and critical thinking. The children have particularly enjoyed jumping in puddles, playing in the mud kitchen, and building sculptures out of mud, rocks, and sticks.

We hope everyone enjoyed their Fall Break. Returning to school this week, our class will get back into our regular rhythm. Rhythm plays a key role in our Waldorf-inspired curriculum, as maintaining predictability and consistency helps create a sense of comfort and security for the children. We will also be working on a winter craft involving snowflakes. Craft projects support the gradual development of each student’s will as they follow more complex directions and also help to build fine motor skills that aid students in future writing and penmanship activities.
