First Grade: November 18-22, 2024
Dear First Grade Families,
Welcome back to school! We hope you had a restorative and joyful holiday. Thank you for joining us for our Grades Presentation and Luncheon prior to the break. The students shared their voices and shining selves so beautifully! Our hope is that the occasion helped everyone feel connected to one another; we are truly thankful for our students and their families!
This week, the class is beginning their study of Vowels. This block is filled with sounds and ethereal imagery, as is befitting of the letters that breathe life into all those Consonants that the class learned during their first two Language Arts blocks. The students are really excited about “collecting” all 26 letters of the alphabet and putting all their hard-earned knowledge together to make words: their own names and those of their loved ones, places, things, feelings . . . everything! Learning consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) patterns will take place in the spring semester. After the Winter Break, First Grade will dive into the four Math Operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
In Handwork, the class has been learning to knit! Each child is producing a piece of work about the size of their hand in the color of their choice. There is a real sense of accomplishment permeating the Handwork dome during knitting sessions.
Announcements and Reminders for First Grade:
12/11: Winter Spiral - First grade walks at 9:15 a.m.
12/19: Pajama Day and Silly Sock Exchange: The class is welcome to come to school in pajamas! Please send a wrapped pair of silly socks for a gift exchange game. Children are also invited to bring a stuffed animal on this day.
12/20: Grades Assembly - 11:15 a.m. (All families are welcome to attend.)
12/20: Last Day of Fall Semester (Half Day dismissal)
12/23 - 01/06: Winter Break (No School)
01/07: Spring semester begins
