First Grade: March 17-21, 2025

Dear First Grade Families,

Now, a week into their final Math Block of the year, First Graders have been invigorated by the physical movement and mental challenges involved so far. With the passage of time and daily repetition, students are growing more comfortable with their math facts as well as noticing patterns in numbers for the first time. These “Eureka!” moments bring a lot of excitement and positive energy to the learning experience of the class. Students have now practiced writing the numbers up to 100 and worked on number identification through games such as bingo. They have reached proficiency in sequencing up to 100 and back as well.

Free play has revealed the students’ processing of the archetypes of king, queen, servant, guard/soldier, etc. With their imaginations fed by traditional tales in our Waldorf-inspired First Grade curriculum, the children enjoy working from a relatively blank palette to engage in open-ended play with each other, exploring different aspects of humanity without the confines of more sharply delineated characters often found in media such as movies and television shows. The children have really been embracing the landscape around the pond overlook, where they not only have a view befitting their junior royal highnesses when perched on a stump throne, but also a hill for scrambling, and the best leaf fishing this side of Ye Olde Canton Road.

This week, the class will finish hearing the current read-aloud, The Children of Noisy Village, a novel by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, best known for her Pippi Longstocking books. They will also continue practicing their songs for Grandfriend’s Day next Friday; those attending this assembly are in for a treat!
